As a firefighter, you’ll fight active fires, make emergency medical calls as a result of injury or illness, assist in vehicle crashes and respond to disasters. Firefighters work long hours under stressful conditions, but the reward of helping the citizens of your community during their worst times is priceless. Here is a guide to becoming a member of the Elizabethtown Fire Department: Elizabethtown participates in the Civil Service System and the hiring process starts by filling out an application. These can be found at City Hall (200 West Dixie Ave.) or at Fire Headquarters (380 Ring Road). This application will ask you to provide an extensive job history, academic record and a list of personal references among other things. Once the application is turned in, it will stay on file for one year. Should an opening in the fire department occur you will be informed that the testing process has begun. The testing process will include a written examination, oral interview, background investigation, drug screening and mechanical aptitude test. Additionally, the state of Kentucky requires all paid firefighters past the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT). You cannot be hired without a current CPAT Card. In order to burn anything, you must apply for a Burn Permit and be in compliance with Ordinance 92.026.

• No material other than wood that has been cut on the property may be burned.
• Leaf piles, building materials, garbage, paper products, furniture and tires are not authorized to be burned.
• No petroleum-based products (accelerates) can be used to start the fire.
• The fire must not be within 50 feet of a structure or the edge of a woodland.
• A competent adult must attend the fire at all times.
• An adequate means of extinguishing the fire must be on hand at all times.

Burn Permit

Yes, you must apply for a Fireworks Display Permit and be in compliance with Ordinance 133.01.

• A competent person of at least 18 years of age must be present at all times.
• Fireworks shall not be ignited within 200 feet of any structure, vehicle or any other person.
• Adequate means of extinguishing must be on hand at all times.

Unless specifically permitted by the Elizabethtown Fire Department, you may only use, ignite, fire or explode consumer fireworks on Memorial Day, July 3rd, July 4th, July 5th and Labor Day between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 a.m. (midnight) and December 31st between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 12:30 a.m. on January 1st. For any other day or time, you must notify the Elizabethtown Fire Department and receive express permission. See Ordinance for further details.
